Are you picking the online low hanging fruit and marketing your business?

Recent conversations with a number of potential clients has made me think about what they are trying to achieve and everyone right now seems so focused only on SEO and Google. They ask:

  • Can you help me improve my Google rankings?
  • Can you get me on page one for these five keywords?
  • Can you guarantee my site will be on page one next week?

It goes on…

The first thing to say is

  • Yes
  • Possibly – depends on your budget
  • WTF – are you kidding me?

It seems that some clients are so wrapped up in Google rankings that they are missing a potentially larger number of opportunities to drive traffic and enquiries to their businesses – which frankly they can do themselves. And for free….

What is the most important thing to your business – page one rankings or clients?

I would say clients. Page one rankings can be a distant promised land, but should you exclude all other options on the way?  I would suggest not. And so would many companies that relied very heavily on one tactic or traffic source – they felt it was safe  because they understood it – and it worked until suddenly it didn’t, and their business enquiries dried up overnight.

Take a look at your business – does most of your traffic come from one source?

Then let’s be brutal, if that’s your only source of clients – you don’t own your business, that traffic source does.

Anyway enough ranting from me.

I wanted to share a number of places you can promote your business, either for free or at a low, that is easy to setup and run.

It is a good idea for all businesses to make sure you have listings or a presence in these places, they will drive traffic, heighten awareness of your business, and drive enquiries.

This will spread the sources of traffic for your business and will allow you to take advantage of the low hanging fruit…
